US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described escalating Syria-Israel tensions as “complicated” during President Trump’s White House meeting with Bahrain’s Crown Prince, commenting shortly after Israeli strikes hit Syria’s defence ministry building and areas near Damascus’ presidential palace. “These are historic rivalries between southwest Syria’s communities – Bedouins, the Druze,” Rubio told journalists, framing recent clashes as an “unfortunate misunderstanding”. His remarks followed Syria’s claims that Israeli missiles had targeted central Damascus overnight. The US top diplomat confirmed Washington was “engaged” with both nations to prevent further escalation, cautiously predicting “real progress” within hours. “We’re working towards proper de-escalation while supporting Syria’s stabilisation,” he added.
