At an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Sudan, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher described the situation in el-Fasher as “an even darker hell,” with reports of mass executions, rape, and mutilation following the Rapid Support Forces’ assault on the city.
Fletcher said nearly 500 people, including patients, were killed in a hospital attack, and tens of thousands have fled on foot, facing extortion and violence.
He condemned the RSF for blocking humanitarian convoys and noted that 13.5 million people had been reached with aid despite severe restrictions.
Fletcher announced a $20m UN emergency fund allocation to support Darfur and Kordofan, but warned that 74% of the year’s response plan remains unfunded.
He called the crisis a “failure of protection” and urged the Council to stop the atrocities, demand full humanitarian access, and address global apathy, saying the horrors in el-Fasher echo Darfur’s past with “blood on the sand – and blood on our hands.”
