UN chief: Gaza famine is ‘a present-day catastrophe, people are dying from hunger’

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the Security Council and the global community to act for Gaza.
He warned that Israel’s military takeover of Gaza City marks a dangerous escalation with devastating civilian consequences.
He condemned Israeli strikes on Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, killing medical staff and journalists, calling for accountability.
Guterres said Gaza faces unparalleled destruction, famine, and systematic dismantling of life-sustaining systems.
He stressed Israel’s obligations as the occupying power to provide essentials and allow humanitarian access.
He highlighted that 366 UN personnel have been killed while aid efforts continue to be blocked and denied.
In the West Bank, he denounced settlement expansion, settler violence, and discriminatory policies as violations of international law.
He warned that new settlement plans threaten the two-state solution by fragmenting Palestinian land.
He called for an immediate, permanent ceasefire, unimpeded aid access, and the unconditional release of hostages.
