US President Donald Trump opened his UNGA appearance by criticising the United Nations as ineffective, accusing it of failing to prevent wars and subsidising illegal migration.
He also ridiculed European allies over their green energy policies and open borders, warning their countries were “going to hell.”
Yet in a swift turnaround, Trump told UN Secretary General António Guterres that the US stood “100 percent” behind the organisation, praising its potential. Another reversal came after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where Trump declared Ukraine could win back all occupied territory with NATO and EU support.
He even endorsed shooting down Russian aircraft if they violated EU airspace.
Zelensky hailed Trump as a possible “game changer” for Ukraine. But the broader debate remained over the UN’s legitimacy, with critics pointing to its inability to uphold peace and enforce international law.
