Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, Marwan Bishara, argues that France’s recognition of Palestine will only be effective if Europe follows with concrete economic and diplomatic pressure on Israel.
He compares the situation to the 1980s campaign against South African apartheid, where European and later US sanctions were crucial.
Bishara stresses that without similar “smart” leverage and sanctions against Israel, such diplomatic recognitions are merely symbolic words at the UN.
